AirMagnet Unveils New Wireless LAN Management Products
Mobile 3.0 Suite Includes New Handheld, Laptop and Reporter Products, 22 New Features Include 802.11g Support, Service Level Monitoring
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct 27, 2003 — AirMagnet, Inc., the leading developer of wireless LAN administration and assessment solutions, today introduced the third generation of its laptop and handheld-based wireless LAN (WLAN) security and performance management products. The AirMagnet Mobile 3.0 suite—AirMagnet Laptop "Trio" and AirMagnet Handheld 3.0—adds 22 new features, including the industry’s most comprehensive support for 802.11g, service level monitoring and assurance for Wi-Fi and voice-over-IP (VoIP), new denial-of-service protection and expanded signal quality and Quality of Service (QoS) assessment. The company also introduced "AirMagnet Reporter," a product that aggregates data captured by the mobile products in any format the user chooses. AirMagnet products perform WLAN troubleshooting, intrusion detection and security policy enforcement for more than 1,500 customers worldwide.
"With the increasing concerns surrounding WLAN security and the proliferation of low cost rogue access points that can easily breach an otherwise secure site, there is a serious need for products that can pervasively and automatically identify related exposures," said Rob Enderle, Principle Analyst for the Enderle Group. "Air Magnet's Mobile 3.0 appears to be a relatively inexpensive way to address this critical need as well as wireless LAN reliability and I believe it to be an indispensable tool for any network manager whether or not they are intentionally operating a wireless LAN."
AirMagnet Laptop Trio
AirMagnet’s new Laptop Trio adds 802.11g support to 802.11a and
802.11b, providing users with an integrated view of their entire WLAN
environment and the ability to pre-emptively identify any performance
or security issues that may arise in any Wi-Fi band, on any channel and
in any country. As customers migrate from .11b to .11g, they may experience
a variety of mixed- mode performance problems that AirMagnet can resolve.
Independent research firm Dell’Oro Group recently reported that
802.11g-based product revenues rose by 48 percent and accounted for 24
percent of the total market for WLAN products in the 2nd quarter of 2003.
Dell’Oro predicts that by 2007, the consumer market will have transitioned
from 802.11b to 802.11g and the enterprise market to multimode 802.11a/802.11g
. Research firm CIR anticipates that 802.11g chipsets will make up 26
percent of chipsets sold in 2003 and grow to 44 percent in 2004 . AirMagnet’s
Laptop Trio protects even those companies that decide not to upgrade or
support 802.11g from unsanctioned, 802.11g-based "rogues."
Laptop Trio includes 22 new alarms that address the latest threats to wireless security and performance, including:
- Six alarms that pertain to 802.11g, including the ability to identify pre-standard 802.11g devices and competition between 802.11b and 802.11g clients that negatively affects connectivity and lowers available throughput.
- A new coverage feature that allows network managers to monitor service levels and ensure that they are in compliance with service level agreement components, including voice-over-IP (VoIP) requirements, minimum and maximum user support, throughput rates and other parameters.
- A new signal quality tool that detects signal fluctuations and correctly identifies their sources as malfunctioning access points (APs), multi-path interference or a range of other possible problems.
- The ability to identify multiple SSIDs within a single AP. This allows WLANs to recognize different classes of users, or set up multiple functions on a single AP by designating one SSID for VoIP and one for WLAN data.
- The ability to identify the latest developments from hardware vendors, including multiple radios within a single device.
AirMagnet Reporter
AirMagnet Reporter is an optional product for AirMagnet Handheld and AirMagnet
Laptop customers. Reporter aggregates information from the AirMagnet mobile
products to create 50+ different types of WLAN management reports, including
overall network health, security threat summaries, rogue access point
logs, critical network outage and performance degradation, bandwidth utilization
trends, packet error and re-transmission rate trends, channel RF signal
strength and signal-to-noise ratios across multiple frequency bands. Network
managers can export reports from their handheld or laptop in all common
file formats, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat
and HTML.
AirMagnet Handheld 3.0
AirMagnet Handheld 3.0 is the latest release of AirMagnet’s 802.11b-based
solution for PocketPC devices. Handheld 3.0 includes 16 new alarms, coverage
and signal measurement tools. The product’s small form factor and
locator functionality make it the ideal tool for network managers who
need to identify the source of network problems, track down rogue APs,
and locate interference sources even in hard-to-reach places.
"We’ve added 159 new customers in the last three months, and every one of them uses our products to solve a different set of problems," said Dean Au, chief executive officer of AirMagnet. "Our experience with a diverse range of customers across multiple market segments has allowed us to stay ahead of the most current challenges IT professionals face in the deployment and operation of WLANs, and we’ve incorporated all that expertise into our third-generation products."
